Our Framework

Our Approach to Research and Outcomes

At the Canadian Spine Institute, research is integrated directly into clinical care. Every patient is followed in a structured way, allowing us to measure outcomes and continuously refine our approach. Our objective is to understand what works best, for whom, and why—so we can deliver better care over time.

Data Collection

Structured Follow-Up and Data Collection

We systematically track patient outcomes before and after treatment, including short-, medium, and long-term results. This allows us to evaluate the effectiveness of different approaches, compare techniques, and continuously refine our surgical indications and treatment strategies.

All patients are followed using validated outcome measures that assess pain, function, and quality of life. These assessments are performed before treatment, after the procedure, and at defined follow-up intervals. This structured process allows us to objectively track recovery, identify patients who may require additional support, and ensure continuity of care—even remotely.

Outcomes tracking includes:

  • Pre-treatment baseline assessment of pain, function, and neurological symptoms
  • Post-treatment follow-up at defined intervals (6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, and beyond)
  • Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) capturing pain, function, disability, and satisfaction
  • Complication tracking and documentation of adverse events
  • Long-term follow-up to assess durability of results
Meaningful Outcomes

Functional Recovery Over Radiographic Success

Outcomes in spine care are complex. Success cannot be measured by a single metric or reduced to a percentage.

Meaningful outcomes include:

  • Functional improvement – Can the patient perform daily activities and meaningful pursuits that were limited before treatment?
  • Pain reduction – Has pain decreased to a level that allows acceptable quality of life?
  • Neurological recovery – Have weakness, numbness, or other neurological deficits improved?
  • Patient satisfaction – Does the patient feel that treatment met realistic expectations?
  • Long-term sustainability – Are improvements maintained over time?
Patient Experience

Beyond Clinical Metrics

In addition to clinical outcomes, we evaluate patient expectations, satisfaction, and perceived results. This helps us better understand differences between objective outcomes and patient experience, improve communication, and align treatment with patient expectations.

Post-Operative Care

Improving the Recovery Process

A key focus of our research is improving the postoperative recovery process. We analyze pain levels, functional recovery, and opioid use following surgery in order to reduce reliance on opioids while improving pain management and promoting a faster return to normal activities. Protocols are continuously refined based on the outcomes observed in our patients.

Personalized Care

Data-Driven Treatment Decisions

By analyzing accumulated data, we aim to identify which patients benefit most from specific treatments and which factors influence recovery. This allows us to move toward more personalized, data-driven care and more precise treatment indications.

CSI uses outcomes data to:

  • Evaluate surgical decision-making—are we operating on the right patients?
  • Refine surgical techniques based on patterns in complications or suboptimal outcomes
  • Assess rehabilitation protocols and functional recovery milestones
  • Identify which patients benefit most from specific treatments

One of the most important measures of surgical quality is appropriate patient selection—knowing when not to operate. Patients directed toward conservative care when surgery is not indicated represent successful clinical judgment.

We regularly evaluate new tools and methods to improve how we measure and understand outcomes. Each new approach is introduced in a structured manner, allowing us to validate its relevance and determine whether it should be integrated into practice.

CSI's research activities include:

  • Clinical studies evaluating surgical techniques, conservative interventions, and rehabilitation protocols
  • Peer-reviewed publications contributing to the scientific literature
  • Collaboration with academic institutions including McGill University
  • Participation in registries and multi-center studies
  • Industry collaboration in the development of emerging surgical technologies
